Which Spanish speaking country is well known for its small frogs called Coquí?

The Coquí is the unofficial symbol of Puerto Rico. The small tree frogs are named for the loud sound they  make (which you can hear by clicking the picture above). Coquís usally begin singing at dusk and continue through the night until dawn. Because they lack membranes between their fingers, Coquís are not adapted to swim. Therefore they lay their eggs on land and fully functional froglets emerge, skipping the tadpole stage. Some Coquís are endangered by extinction. Can you guess why?

Finally, if you go to Puerto Rico, you will only be hearing half the Coquís on the island: can you guess which gender (male or female) makes the sound?
